the moon in the morning

The Morning Moon

Seeing the moon just before sunrise is a real treat. I’m used to stepping out to commune with the sun, but this time of year the sun takes its time. Today I woke too early for my own good. When I ventured outside at 6:00am, I found the moon in the minutes before it trades places with the sun. It looked like a hammock, a slim scoop of light. And then I saw the last fans of the night, the few stars surrounding the main attraction. The scene was enchanting.

Seeing the moon shining bright in the morning sky was like discovering a present behind the Christmas tree or finding your favorite sweater in the back of the closet. You’re not expecting the treat because you’re used to seeing something entirely different.

The sun is well above the horizon now, lending a golden glow to my rocking chair, but I’ll never forget the moon in the sky this morning. I see the sunrise nearly every day, but the moon, the moon, wow. It was a perfect picture of a changing season.

There are delights to discover every day. Today I’ll find mine in a garden I tend. It’s not the garden of our family home on Eulalia Road. This one represents the future. Jenn, my future daughter in law who I adore, and my son Matt gave me their garden to reimagine. What a gift! I’m heading over this afternoon. Some plants will be fading with summer’s end, but I’ll see the pumpkins and gourds planted in July and the mums that dot the landscape. I’m so happy, thinking about what this day will bring. With this attitude, it’s sure to be full of surprises.

PS. That’s not my moon in the photo above. I haven’t figured out how to take a good picture of the moon. This photo was taken by Nazarii Neshcherenskyi.
