Sun and Faith

Faith In The Morning Sun

This week rain dripped from our gutters with the steady pace of a metronome. Cast before a dark sky, my trees looked arthritic with black branches bent and awkward. The grass looked overwhelmed with water. Far worse, I wasn’t going to see the sun, and I rely on it. Sunlight is my path to prayer and wellness.

All I could do this morning was imagine the sun behind the iron curtain of clouds. I pictured the spot, just above the tree line, where it shines at 9:30 am. It’s my favorite time to sit with the sun. In my kitchen, it bathes the counter with a soft and spiritual glow that gives me an extraordinary sense of calm. It’s as if I’m wrapped in peace and everything is more than fine.

When it rains day after day, which it has this week, the sun becomes a matter of faith. You must envision its place on the horizon and call on your soul for memories of its soothing power. Today, I will pray for the faith and imagination required to feel the sun’s peace without its light. This exercise may seem low on the faith scale. It’s not about heaven or loving Jesus. Still, I find the healing power of the sun miraculous.

We can embrace faith wherever we find it. Scoop it up and feed it. Every form of faith seems worthy and not intended for comparison. The same is true of love. Love is real in any form, in any measure. The sun, faith and love are wonderful to consider separately or together. Each is holy in its own way.
